To predict the durability performance of a vehicle door several tests are carried out on real hardware. To complement these physical tests by simulation is a challenging task. The results from the simulation of a truck door slam, which is a highly dynamic process, are provided below.

A common vehicle door is built up of several  single sheet components. The consideration of the contact between these sheets (details marked grey in the image below) is of essential importance for the correct modeling of this structure, especially under dynamic load conditions.

Challenges for the MBS simulation are:

  • The problem is a highly dynamic process.
  • Nonlinear contact behavior between sheets has significant influence on the results.
  • Simulation run should be finished within acceptable time (less than 3 hours per door slam).
